Haverhill Choral Society attracts a broad range of talents and experiences.

President: Christopher Gurteen
Musical Director: Jane Wright

From accomplished choralists to tuneful have-a-go singers, HCS attracts a large (and growing) crowd. The one thing we have in common is our love of singing.

Some members have been with us over 30 years, others only joined at the last rehearsal. As a newcomer you will naturally be sitting amongst more experienced members, only too willing to make your first few visits much smoother.

We aim to entertain with an average of three main concerts per calendar year. Alongside are a number of social events; held both for our own entertainment and for the general public.

As a member or relative of a member of the HCS you can also expect to be invited to a wide range of optional events. We are always looking for entertaining ways to raise funds for the Society and often hold Barn Dances or Coffee Mornings, even tabletop sales during the tea break at rehearsals.

Jane Wright has been Musical Director of Haverhill Choral Society since the summer of 2002.  Jane graduated from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, in 1977, studying singing with Dorothy Richardson, and later with John Carol Case.  She was Head of Music at the Samuel Ward Academy in Haverhill, Suffolk from 1984 to 2011, and continues to teach music at the school.

Jane has sung in many choral societies, chamber choirs (including the Britten-Pears Chamber Choir and the St Edmundsbury Festival Chorus), and solo, including at Snape Maltings with the Suffolk Youth Orchestra.  She was a regular soloist with the Stour Valley Singers.  She has been the musical director of both Sudbury and Clare Choral Societies, and guest director of the Kings' Taveners and Diversity.

She worked as vocal tutor to the Suffolk Youth Jubilee Choir for 15 years and latterly with the award-winning Harmony Girls' Choir based in Ipswich. Jane has also been an Examiner for both GCSE and A level Music.  She has been a guest speaker at the Britten-Pears School of Advanced Musical Studies at Snape following several successful composition collaborations between her school and Aldeburgh Education.

Recently, Jane and several other members of the Choral Society were awarded the Honorary Freedom of Haverhill to recognise their service to music in the community forover 20 years.  We understand that, in theory, we are now allowed to drive our sheep along the High Street!
